Unexpected change meant Anna needed more time to care for her husband and young family.

Anna's story

I met my husband Mark through my work as a team leader at a UK bank where I’d been for 12 years. Mark had, for some time, had multiple sclerosis and with two children under four life was hectic, but we were managing.

But when Mark’s condition unexpectedly worsened meaning he couldn’t walk anymore, he’d had to give up his job completely and I knew I’d need to spend a lot more time caring for him.

Things happened so quickly, I didn’t know what to do or where to turn for help.

How BWC helped

When Anna got in touch she told us about her concerns; how was she going to juggle the job she loved, her reduced finances and caring for her husband and two young children.

We agreed that one of our team would go and visit the family in their home. As a result a care assessment was arranged through the local authority who advised that their home needed a redesign to introduce a ground floor bedroom and bathroom. Working with Mark and Anna we then applied for, and got, a Disabled Facilities Grant to help with the costs of these improvements, (adaptations). We were also able to contribute to the cost of making these changes to the family home and identified a number of other organisations who were also able to contribute.

Anna and Mark had been through a lot and while they’d tried to stay positive they knew life had changed, so they welcomed the 6 sessions of relationship counselling we provided through our partner Relate.

The redesign of their home has made the family feel more in control and more independent and while they’re aware that they still face challenges they are reassured that there are people, networks and organisations out there to help.
