Trustees

Tony enjoyed a career at HSBC for over twenty five years, working across a number of different business areas, including the Global HR team. Tony now works for Eversheds Sutherland LLP holding responsibility for the development of their Diversity and CR strategy and leading their social mobility programmes.

Lena is a dual-qualified Chartered Certified Accountant and a US Certified Public Accountant with over 20 years of experience working with global financial services companies in the US and Europe. She is currently Head of Financial Operations for MUFG Investor Services, a division of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc (MUFG), one of the largest banks in the world. Lena’s previous roles include Head of External Reporting and Accounting Policy for Close Brothers Group plc, a UK merchant banking group and Director in the Capital Markets Group of PwC, based in London and New York.

Michael is a Chartered Financial Analyst, working for Morningstar as an equity analyst based in the Netherlands. Michael brings with him over a decade of experience in the financial services industry, having previously worked in the UK and Australia. In his prior role with Close Brothers Asset Management in London he worked within a multi-asset team managing over GBP 1.3 billion in assets.

Lillian is a lawyer and worked in international financial services where she has been Managing Director of a life assurance company and has subsequently held various non-executive roles in investment management, trust companies, charities and regulatory authorities. She is the current Chair of the Isle of Man Financial Services Authority as well as being Chair of the Island’s Research Ethics Committee. She is a Past President of the UK Chartered Insurance Institute and is a member of their professional standards committee.

Rachel has recently taken early retirement after almost 35 years with Barclays where she held a variety of roles across business management, risk and control, planning and commercial, most recently in the Payments Digital, Data and Analytics team as Head of Planning and Controls.

Marco joined LGT following the acquisition of abrdn’s discretionary investment management business in 2023. With over 18 years experience, he currently manages discretionary private client portfolios for both UK and International high net worth individuals, private family groups, trusts and pensions funds. Prior to abrdn, Marco co-managed the $3bn European equity portfolio for the South Korean Sovereign Wealth Fund (KIC), helping establish its presence in London, as one of its first local hires. Prior to this he spent 7 years as an Assistant Fund Manager at the Relx Pension fund.

Marco is a CFA Charterholder, a member of the CFA Society of the UK and the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments and graduated from the University of Southampton with a BSC in Economics and Management Science.

Prior to taking early retirement in 2014, Beverley’s 35-year career at HSBC spanned large-scale leadership roles, having been Regional Director of a number of geographies throughout the UK and Head of the UK retail and wealth management business. Beverley has a portfolio of non-executive directorships, which includes her role at Bank Workers Charity, and also HSBC Bank Pension Trust (UK) Limited.

Suzanne is the Chief People and Transformation Officer for PRS for Music. Previously, Suzanne was an HR Director at Santander where she worked for over 15 years and has a strong interest in culture, diversity, wellbeing and health. Suzanne also worked as a management consultant at Accenture specialising in change management.

Sharon’s current role is as Wellbeing & Benefits Lead at NatWest Group, having previously worked as a pensions actuary for both Natwest and PwC. As well as her actuarial background, Sharon has an MSc in Psychology and is passionate about combining her knowledge of statistics and psychology to drive solutions led by people and data.

Duncan joined Bank Workers Charity in September 2020 as a Trustee and member of the Audit and Risk Committee. Duncan has worked in financial services for 40 years, twenty-five of which were in Internal Audit with extensive experience in global markets, investment, wealth management, regulation and governance. He has worked at several institutions including Barclays, Chase Manhattan, Bank of America, HBOS and Grant Thornton. He holds an ACIB qualification (Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers) and a BSc in Financial Studies from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

Leadership team

Jonathan joined Bank Workers Charity in late 2023. Previously he worked in marketing or executive roles at HSBC, Orange, eBay, Ancestry, and FairFX. Jonathan is a trustee of two charities: Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Action (CIVA) and The Chancery Lane Project (TCLP). CIVA conceives, incubates, and funds new ways of tackling societal problems. TCLP tackles climate change through non-contentious law.

Simon joined us in early 2019. Prior to starting at Bank Workers Charity, Simon had a nine-year career at the Royal College of General Practitioners, the examining and professional body for GPs in the UK. Simon held a number of commercial and professional development roles, including Executive Director of GP Forward View, which saw him lead the College’s response to NHS England’s £2.5bn investment in general practice. Simon previously worked at the IFS School of Finance (now the London Institute of Banking and Finance), where he led the marketing and PR teams.

Selam joined Bank Workers Charity in 2007 as a Finance Officer. With a background in Accounting and IT, he manages the finance, IT and risk functions, which includes fund mergers and implementation of key IT projects. He is also serving as the Company Secretary and supports the work of the Finance and Investment Committee, and the Board of Trustees. Before joining Bank Workers Charity, Selam worked in the private sector for more than seven years, and was principally responsible for administering the finance and systems of a consultancy firm based in London.

Edel joined us in November 2023. She is a Chartered Accountant. Prior to joining BWC she worked as Head of Finance for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Before moving to the Charity Sector she worked in the insurance sector, working for Legal & General, GE, Genworth and AXA in various financial accounting, project and business partnering roles.

Victoria joined us in late 2019 with 16 years’ experience in the Charity Sector, specialising in grant making and advice giving. Victoria most recently worked for two health-based grant makers and prior to that, was Head of Advice and Support at Independent Age. She is currently Vice Chair for the Cicely Northcote Trust, a South London-based grant maker supporting local charities.

Liina joined us in 2022 and leads our marketing and data teams. Her role supports the development of our digital presence and activities, driving awareness and innovation of our services, and empowering the banking community. Before joining the team, Liina worked in both the private and charitable sectors, most recently looking after digital platforms and content strategy for the Royal Institution.

Paul joined the team in 2013, bringing over 25 years’ experience to head up the wellbeing team. Now, he leads the development and delivery of wellbeing-themed webinars across the banking community. Before joining us, Paul set up the first employee assistance programme (EAP) for the NHS, and managed HSBC’s internal EAP for 11 years. He regularly speaks as a wellbeing expert at conferences and events, and writes for HR journals on different aspects of workplace wellbeing.

Our culture

From trustees to case workers, finance professionals and wellbeing experts – our team works collaboratively to develop and deliver services that our community needs.

Where we started

Our commitment to support began in 1883 with the Bank Clerk’s Orphanage, founded by bankers to help children of ill or deceased clerks. By 1963, we were caring for over 1,000 children and receiving financial support from over 66,000 bank workers.

In the 1980s, our support extended to the needs of The Bankers Beneficent Society, whom we merged with to create The Bankers Benevolent Fund.

Then, in 2011 we expanded our impact by collaborating with expert partners, re-branding ourselves as the Bank Workers Charity – the name our clients know us by today.
